Bigger is Not Always Better
Before I started using coupons, I always thought it was cheapest to buy in bulk. If you buy a 24 pack of toilet paper, you'll be paying less per roll than if you buy a 4 pack. If you buy a 25 oz. box of cereal, you'll be paying less per ounce than if you buy a 10 oz. box of cereal. Many times this is true, but I encourage you to always check, because even without coupons, you just never know.
When I first started using coupons, I still thought this was the case. I'd see a large bottle of Tide for $11.99, and use my $1.00 coupon and spend $10.99. I thought I was getting a good deal because a)I'd bought the bigger size, so of course it was cheaper, and b) I'd used a coupon, so I was getting even bigger savings.
After couponing for a while, I noticed that a lot of times buying in bulk is not cheaper. A coupon for $1.00 off a $10.00 product will not give you near the savings as a coupon off a $3.00 product. Many coupons will have a size exclusion on them, but you will find numerous coupons that will have no size exclusion at all. For those coupons with no size exclusions, I encourage you to start thinking outside the box. My goal as a coupon shopper is to get a stockpile of items at a fraction of the cost...how can I do this if I am buying the smallest product size that the coupon allows? Let me give you an example...These prices are from previous sales:
Contadina Tomato Sauce:
15 oz. $0.70
8 oz. $0.37
Coupon for $0.75 off 3...If you buy the 15 oz. can you will end up paying $1.35 (or $0.45 a can...$0.03 an ounce). If you buy the 8 oz. can you will end up paying $0.36 (or $0.13 a can...or less than $0.02 an ounce).
Yes you are buying smaller cans, but if you have multiple coupons you will be able to buy this deal several times, so you will still be stocking up.
Dove Ultimate Deodorant:
2.6 oz. $3.99
0.5 oz. $0.97
Coupon for $1.00 off 1...If you buy the 2.6 oz. you will end up paying $2.99 (or $1.15 an ounce). If you buy the 0.5 oz. you will end up paying NOTHING (or $0.00 an ounce)
Let me make a quick note about this...when I have coupons that I KNOW will get me travel size products FREE, I try to hold onto them until the day they expire, because sometimes Walgreens or CVS will run deals where you can make money on the full size product if you have a coupon.
Again, if you are buying multiple newspapers, or printing coupons from the internet (usually have a print limit of 2), you will have multiple coupons, so you will still be stocking up...only now for FREE.
Cottonelle Toilet Paper:
12 pack: on sale $4.99
4 pack: on sale for $1.99
Coupon for $1.00 off 1...If you buy the 12 pack you will end up paying $3.99 (or $0.33 a roll). If you buy the 4 pack you will end up paying $0.99 (or $0.25 a roll).
All of these prices and coupons are from previous weeks, so I'm not sure what they are priced at right now. I just wanted to give you guys examples.
Do you price match to see what size products will give you a better price? I encourage you to think outside the box...start price matching...take a calculator with you into the store and do some number crunching. I think you'll be surprised to find that bigger isn't always a better value.

Should you print off every coupon that I mention?
Several people have mentioned to me that they are printing off a ton of coupons almost daily. With the cost of ink and paper, this could get expensive VERY fast. I know that I post about different printable coupons every day, but I want you to know that I do NOT print all of these coupons off. Many times you will find these same coupons in your newspaper, and many times the coupons that I post about are for items that I will not be using for several weeks.
I DO print the coupons that are high value...I do this because I know that in a matter of hours these coupons will reach their print limits and will no longer be available (ie. the $1.50 Tony's pizza coupon...this coupon reached it's print limit in a matter of hours, so I made sure to snag it while it was still available). I also print coupons that I KNOW are for products that are on sale, or that I will be using in the next couple of weeks.
When you first start couponing, it is so tempting to try to chase every deal and print every coupon. There will always be more sales and more coupons. If you miss out on a few you can be sure that another GREAT deal is just around the corner. Do what works best for your family and your budget, but don't feel like you need to print off every coupon that comes around.

New High Value Coupons
There are several new high value coupons on Coupons.com that I wanted to mention to you.
$2.00 off 1 Clean and Clear Finishes Product
$2.00 off 1 Coppertone Product
$3.00 off 2 Glade 10 oz Candles or Reed Diffusers
We seem to go through sunblock very quickly at our house, especially in the summer time, so I always love to find high value sunblock lotion.
Go here to print any of these coupons.

HEB Update
I just received a call from someone at our local HEB. He received my email that I sent to their corporate office stating my concerns with using Internet coupons at HEB. He said that he would like to meet with me (possibly on Monday morning) to discuss my concerns. He said that he couldn't guarantee any answers, but that he wanted to at least hear my concerns and have an opportunity to discuss them with me. So, my request from all of you...leave a comment below telling me some issues you've had so that I can make sure to address them with him when we meet. You can also email me at managinghismoney @gmail.com, or at mljawingfield @yahoo.com. I've spoken to several of you who have concerns, but would love to have your concerns/questions written out so I can make sure to address them when I go in to speak to him.
For those of you who know me real well, can you believe that I am going to talk to him and all his managers? I get so nervous speaking in front of people and don't like any sort of conflict at all. I think that couponing has made me more confident in speaking up! :)

Coupon Policy for Commissary
In April I was invited to speak about coupons to the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group that I attend. Today was our last meeting of the year. For some reason it hit me today that a lot of the ladies in my MOPS group have husbands in the military, and they must do a lot of grocery shopping at the commissary on base. I never even thought to research the commissary coupon policy since I never shop there, but thought it might be helpful for those of you who do. Please keep in mind that since I have never shopped there or talked to anyone who works there I have no first hand knowledge of how they are towards coupon shoppers. I will provide you with the information that I have found and will leave it up to those of you who shop at the commissary to take it from there.
Go here to read the coupon policy taken directly from their website.
Also, as I was researching this, I came upon the Commissary Facebook Page. This was taken directly from a status update that was posted on their page:
Defense Commissary Agency: Did you know we accept manufacturer coupons that have a Walgreens Register Rewards, Kroger, Target and other retailer’s logo on them? Yes – as long as the coupon verbiage does not limit redemption solely to those stores. Each coupon must be individually evaluated to ensure it states it is a manufacturer coupon and doesn’t limit its use solely to the retailer advertised, the commissary can accept it.
If you want to read it for yourself, go here. It was a status update several hours ago, so you might have to scroll down the page a bit depending on when you are reading this.
Based on that statement, it sounds like they should accept your Register Rewards from Walgreens. Like I said before, I have no first hand knowledge of if this works or not. If you shop at the commissary and want to use your Register Rewards, I would print off the commissary's coupon policy and go to their Facebook page and print off the Status update from above. Take both of those to customer service and see what they say. There is the possibility that they might tell you they don't accept them, but if it were me, I would question them a bit (nicely of course) and ask why it says they do on their Facebook page.
I would LOVE to hear feedback on this. Since I can't go and check it out myself, I would love to hear from some of you if it actually worked!! How exciting to be able to use your Register Rewards at the commissary to lower your grocery bill!!
Thanks Hip 2 Save for the information about the Commissary Facebook Page!!

Coupon for $1.00 off Hidden Valley Ranch, KC Masterpiece, or Glad Food Storage
This coupon seems a bit random to me:
$1.00 off any Hidden Valley Ranch, KC Masterpiece, or Glad Food Storage Product
(Doesn't that combination seem a bit odd to put together on one coupon?)
I know that the last time I checked KC Masterpiece was priced at less than $1.50 at Wal-Mart, so you should pay less than $0.50 after coupon.
Go here to print this coupon, and remember that you should be able to print this coupon off twice...just hit your back button 2 or 3 times after printing it the first time and it should automatically reprint.
Thanks Common Sense With Money!!
Upcoming Deal on Little Swimmers at Walgreens!!
I just sat down at my computer a few minutes ago to start looking through the upcoming Walgreens ad. I will be posting my ad/coupon match up a little later this weekend, but I wanted to point out one GREAT deal on Huggies Little Swimmers. When my boys were little, we went through these like crazy, and they were SUPER expensive. Walgreens is going to have these on sale (starting Sunday, May 23), and I wanted to give you guys a heads up on the deal.
Huggies Little Swimmers $6.99
-use coupon for $1.50 off Little Swimmers (found here...remember to find it quickly click on the Household category)
-AND use Walgreens coupon for $2.00 off Little Swimmers. This coupon is found in the Walgreens May coupon book. You can find these at the front of the store next to the store ads. If you can't find them there they sometimes have additional ones where you pick up your prescriptions, or you can always ask a cashier.
Final Price: $3.49
One more thing to note, you should be able to print off the coupon for $1.50 off Little Swimmers twice. If you do that and want to pick up 2 packages, you will only have to give the cashier ONE Walgreens $2.00 off coupon...the register will automatically take $2.00 off EACH Little Swimmers that you buy, so one $2.00 coupon will really take off $4.00.
That is a REALLY good price on Little Swimmers, and remember if you have Register Rewards left from last week you can lower the price even further. If you do want to use a Register Reward, remember that you have to have an even number of products to manufacturer's coupons, so you'll need to pick up a small filler item!

FREE Spicy Chicken Sandwich at Chick-fil-A
Let me be the first to say that I LOVE Chick-fil-A...Yes, I was one of the people that made her family dress up like cows the last time Chick-fil-A gave out FREE meals to everyone who came dressed like cows, and you better believe the next time they run that promotion we'll be doing it again...My husband was so pleased with me that day. (Can you sense the sarcasm? :) Well, they are adding a new Spicy Chicken Sandwich to their menu in June, and they are currently running a promotion where you can sign up to reserve your own Spicy Chicken Sandwich before it actually comes out on the menu. You need to go here to sign up and reserve your sandwich...type in your location and then you can choose between the two different Chick-fil-A's in town. I just reserved mine and there were about 600 reservations left at both stores. You can choose between different dates and times to actually get your sandwich. I'm thinking that as soon as the word gets out on this promotion that the sandwiches will go fast, so I'd go ahead and reserve yours as soon as you can!!
Thanks Happy Clippings!

Coupon Organization
I have had several people ask me how I organize my coupons, so I thought I would sit down and write a post about it. Let me start off by saying that there are numerous ways to organize your coupons, and what works for me might not work for you. Some people use small accordion style coupon organizers; some people simply save and file their coupon inserts and only clip coupons out when they need them for specific sales. I use a coupon binder that holds all my coupons. Let me say that this method does take more time to organize, but I've found that it makes my shopping trip so much more enjoyable. I am not sorting through coupons at the stores...everything is right in front of me.
This is my coupon binder:
It's a basic 3 ring binder (I have a 3" binder). Those of you just starting out probably won't need one so big, but you will really be amazed at how quickly your stash of coupons will grow!! I use baseball card inserts to store all of my coupons. (These can be found at Wal-Mart, Target, Craft Stores, etc.) I organize my coupons into different categories so I can find them quickly at the store. Some people choose to do this alphabetically, but I try to organize my coupons following the simple lay out of the store.
My basic categories are:
-Frozen Foods
-Dairy (this includes yogurt, cheeses, eggs, pillsbury bread tubes...anything you would find in the dairy aisle of the grocery store)
-Meats
-Pasta/Rice/Canned Chilis (Again, think of products that are on that aisle in your grocery store)
-Snack Foods (this includes Chips, Cookies, Candies, Crackers)
-Baking Goods (this includes spices, sugars, flour, cake mixes, frosting, etc.)
-Breads
-Condiments (Salad Dressing, Ketchup, Salsa, Mustard, etc)
-Canned Vegetables/Fruits
-Cereal/Breakfast Foods
-Beverages
-Oral Care
-Shaving Needs
-Deodorants
-Shampoos/Body Wash
-Make-up/Moisturizer/Face Cleansers
-Feminine Products
-Paper Goods
-Cleaning Supplies
-Medicines
-Store Coupons (I have this section to organize store coupons../Target, Albertsons, Walgreens, CVS that can be combined with additional manufacturer's coupons.
As I am walking through the store I simply flip my binder open to the category that corresponds with what aisle I am on. All of my coupons are laid out right in front of me, so I don't spend time having to flip through numerous coupons to find the one I need. This also helps because I can compare prices and see if there are any GREAT deals that I might have otherwise missed.
As I am walking through the store and finding coupons that I will be using, I simply take the coupon out of the insert and place it in a holder that is in the front of my binder. I use a pencil case that I found in the school supplies section. This helps so much because when I am checking out I don't have to continue sorting through my coupons, trying to make sure that I have all the coupons I want to use. I simply open up my coupon holder and hand them all to the cashier.
At the back of my binder I store all of the different Coupon Policies from different stores. This way if I run into an issue with a cashier who doesn't want to accept my coupons, I simply pull out the coupon policy and show the cashier what the store policy actually says. You will be surprised at the number of cashiers (and managers) who have no idea what their coupon policy states.
As I said before, there are numerous ways to organize your coupons. You'll need to figure out what works best for you and your family. The coupon binder is just one method that I've found works GREAT for me. How do all of you organize your coupons? I'd love feedback on this...you might have ideas that I've never thought of!!
Also, let me know if you think posts like this are useful for you? Thinking that it might be good to do posts every now and then about Couponing 101...let me know!!

Issues with Internet Coupons at HEB Continued : )
I know that I've posted previously about having problems with certain Intenet coupons not being accepted at HEB. I went up to the store to talk to the managers, and left without feeling like I'd learned anything to help us coupon shoppers out. Brittney suggested that it might be a good idea to contact someone higher up, so I sat down and emailed them my concerns. I received an email back that was basically just an email of their coupon policy...no clarifications or anything. This morning I emailed them back telling them I already have a copy of the coupon policy but that I would like more answers about why our coupons aren't scanning. I just received a response to my second email from Customer Relations:
Mrs. Wingfield:
I have asked upper management to review the coupon policy with their Partners.
Thanks
So, I'm not sure what this means, but it looks like they are at least looking into the issue. Hopefully we'll get some clarification about this sometime soon!!

Price Match at Wal-Mart
Just wanted to remind you that you can price match at Wal-Mart. I have never shopped at Lowe's, but I decided to look through their weekly ad that was mailed to my house. They have their store brand milk (1 gallon) on sale for $1.88 this week. This means that you should be able to buy Wal-Mart's store brand milk and price match it with Lowe's ad. $1.88 for a gallon of milk is a GOOD deal (especially if you have kids who go through 4 gallons of milk in one week :)
The last time I was at Wal-Mart, I asked about price matching produce. I was told by the cashier that they will price match...as long as is it is for the same product: Gala Apples for Gala Apples, lb. for lb., etc. I haven't tried it yet, but it's something to keep your eye on.

GREAT Coupon for $1.50 off Tony's Pizza Product
(I posted this last night, and it looks like the $1.50 coupon has already reached it's print limit...I sure hope that you were able to print it off. You should still be able to print the coupon for $1.00 off 2 Tony's Pizza Products.)
I was just looking at Hip2Save's website, and found a GREAT coupon on Tony's Pizza. All you have to do is go here and submit a budget savvy tip. You'll then be able to print a coupon for $1.50 off one Tony's Original Crust Pizza. My tip was something simple about combining coupons with sale prices to save more money. I was able to print this coupon off twice, and then I noticed on the sidebar that there was another coupon available for $1.00 off any 2 Tony's Pizza Products. I was able to print this coupon off twice as well. These are fairly inexpensive pizzas...I know that I've seen them go on sale at Albertsons for less than $2.00. I'm not sure how much they cost at Wal-Mart, but with these coupons they should be a GREAT deal!!
Thanks Hip 2 Save and Penny Pinchin' Mom!!

HEB Ad/Coupon Match Up (May 19 - 25)
It looks like there are going to be several good deals at HEB this week. As we head into summer we should see more sales on sandwich meats, hot dogs, and chips. Stores know that we'll be grilling and enjoying time outdoors, so they tend to put these items on sale. Last week HEB had a meal deal with sandwich meat, and this week it's hot dogs. When these sales come around I tend to stock up and freeze the extras that I buy. Remember to get the most savings BUY when items are on sale and try to WAIT until the next big sale to buy again!!

Sonic Buy One Get One Free Shakes!!
Have you seen the commercial for Sonic where they advertise Buy One Shake and get the Second for FREE? I have to admit that I LOVE Sonic Drinks...Lemon Berry Slushes, Cherry Limeades, Strawberry Cream Slushes, and of course Dr. Pepper with wonderful Sonic ice! :) We head over to Happy Hour at Sonic a couple of times a month, and now I just might have to take one or two more trips!
If you buy one Real Ice Cream Shake at regular price you will get one free shake of equal or lesser value. What if you are driving around town by yourself and you really want a shake...you have the option of getting your FREE shake right when you order or receiving a coupon for a FREE shake on a future visit...how GREAT is that!?! Issues with Internet Coupons at HEB
Okay, I know that some of you have had issues with HEB accepting/not accepting internet coupons...I've had issues as well. I decided to go up to the store today and try to get some answers from the managers. I want to make things easier on all of us coupon shoppers!! I printed off HEB's coupon policy, packed up my coupons, and my 3 year old son and headed over to HEB. I talked with four different people at HEB, and left with a little more knowledge about how HEB's coupon policy works (maybe?)
-HEB's coupon policy says that they will accept internet coupons with a barcode...but the people I talked to said they will not accept them if the coupons don't scan...they will NOT manually enter them. My next question for them was if there was a way we could find out if our internet coupons will scan BEFORE going through the checkout line. They said there was no real way to know...but said that if the store was not busy that we could take internet coupons up to the customer service desk and they would try to scan them before we do our shopping. It sounded like they've had issues with coupon fraud, so they seemed a bit hesitant about internet coupons.
I didn't really get the answer that I was hoping for. It seems like internet coupons are going to be hit or miss at HEB. I told them that the same coupons that weren't scanning at their store were scanning and being accepted at Target, Wal-Mart, Albertsons, etc. The only thing they could tell me was there was something in their computer systems that were not recognizing the coupons as valid.
I was told that HEB has printable coupons on their website, and that the stores SHOULD accept all coupon printed directly from there. Go here to view these coupons.
I spent about 20 minutes talking to them and trying to get a better understanding of what coupons they will accept. I have to admit that I left without gaining any new knowledge...what it boils down to is that HEB WILL accept internet coupons as long as they scan, and there is no way to know if they will scan or not until the cashier tries them.
I'm a little frustrated by the whole scenario, but you sometimes run into these issues when shopping with coupons.
Oh, after talking to the people at HEB, I went through the store to try to pick up a few things...I got up to checkout and the cashier told me that I wasn't allowed to use internet coupons AT ALL!! I politely told her that I had just spent 20 minutes talking to managers about this issue, and she said that she wouldn't scan them. I spotted one of the men that I had talked to and motioned for him to come over. He told her to scan them (and thankfully they all went through). All I can say is that it was just a bit frustrating trying to find answers, and leaving not knowing any more than when I went in.
Good news though...the $0.60 off Dr. Pepper coupons do work (and you get free Manwich Sloppy Joe mix when you buy a Dr. Pepper)
-the coupon for $1.00 off Oscar Mayer lunch meat also works!!

Shopping Trip
I went shopping today because I wanted to buy some chicken breasts that are on sale at Albertsons for $1.68/lb. (the sale ends tomorrow). I stopped at Walgreens, Target, and Albertsons. I bought everything pictured below, and spent...
$34.67...yes my total is a bit higher than normal, but that is because I bought 15 lbs. of chicken breasts. The chicken alone cost $25.20...so less than $10.00 for everything else!! I saved $150.28...a savings of 81%!! Oh, and I still have a $5.00 gift card from Target that I received today!!
Here's what I bought:
Albertsons:
15 lbs. of chicken breast
4 French's mustard
4 Tabasco Sauce
3 Steamfresh Veggies
4 Sunny D Juices
Walgreens:
2 Gillette Body Washes
2 Lysol Toilet Bowl Cleaners
Target:
4 Scrubbing Bubbles Extend-a-Clean
4 Carefree Pantiliners
3 Nivea Body Wash for Women
3 Dove Deodorants
6 gallons of water
I was down to no chicken in my freezer, so I REALLY needed it. I've been able to stock up on ground turkey (remember when it was on sale for $1.00/lb.), ground beef, and now chicken over the last few weeks. I'm hoping that I won't have to buy meat for at least 2 months...hold off until the next GREAT sale!
How are your stockpiles looking? I have enough meat and veggies to last a while, but my cereal stockpile is starting to dwindle...down to only 24 boxes. That might sound like a lot, but won't last a full month at our house. I'm hoping that I can find a good deal in the next couple of weeks, but if not at least I won't have to worry about buying meats, veggies, AND cereal like I would if I hadn't been stocking up on those items.

She spent $3.98, and saved $41.31...91% savings!!!
Check out her precious munchkin in the picture!!
I am so encouraged when I see that other people are saving money!! Let me know how y'all are doing!!

May Spending (Week 2)
I have to say that since I started getting serious about saving money with coupons that I have so much fun when I go grocery shopping!! I used to dread going shopping because I knew that I would go to the store and spend a whole lot of money on what seemed like just a few bags of groceries. Now I leave the store with a lot more than I used to and for a fraction of the cost.
Here's my rundown of this week's grocery shopping (remember my grocery budget includes all cleaning supplies, toiletries, medicines, and food):
Spent: $51.07
Saved: $268.78 (That's a savings of 84%!!!)
I remember telling my husband a couple of months ago that I'd love to get our grocery expenses down to $50 a week, but that I didn't think it was possible with a family of five...I think I'm getting close to being there. Some weeks I am under $50, and others a little over...but I am just amazed at how much how our grocery budget has shrunk in just a few months time!!
How are all of you doing? Remember to start where you are and don't give up...any amount of savings is better than none at all!!

Kraft Coupons
I didn't check coupon websites over the weekend, so I was very surprised when I went to Target.com this morning to find a LOT of coupons for different Kraft products!! Most of these coupons are for a FREE item when you buy 2 or 3 other items. I did not print out all of these coupons, but the ones I did print out were all TARGET coupons...what does that mean? That means that we can combine manufacturer's coupons with these Target coupons to get additional savings!! And remember, Target will let you use coupons on products that you are going to be getting FREE as well. If you can find a sale, and combine it with manufacturer's coupons AND Target coupons you'll be getting items at rock bottom prices!! Go here if you want to see what coupons are available.
Just wanted to give you guys a heads up, so you can be on the lookout for sales at Target!! Let me know if you come across any good deals!!
Oscar Mayer Coupons (Deal Scenarios at HEB and Target)
Coupons.com has released a couple of new Oscar Mayer coupons.
$1/2 Oscar Mayer Lunchmeats
$1/2 Oscar Mayer Hotdogs
HEB is still running this meal deal:
Buy: Oscar Mayer Lunchmeat AND Kraft Cheese
GET FREE: HEB Potato Chips, Kool-Aid Singles, Mrs. Baird's Small White Bread, and Nabisco Barnum's Animal Crackers

Whenever HEB has this meal deal, I try to stock up...lunch meat/cheese/chips are items that we go through a lot, so any time I can find a good deal on these I buy a lot. Each meal deal will probably cost around $6.00...which sounds like a lot to me, but you have to remember that you are getting almost $6.00 worth of additional products for FREE!!
OR, you could use these coupons at Target:

-use 2 $1/2 Oscar Mayer lunchmeats coupons
-PLUS use FREE lunchmeats Target coupon
If you are interested in buying hot dogs, do the same deal as above, only use the hot dog coupons instead (of course :)
