Cow Appreciation Day
Just a heads up for you. Chick-fil-a has a Cow Appreciation Day every year. It's coming up on July 9th. If you go to their stores dressed as a cow you get a FREE meal!! Okay, I am sure that a lot of you are thinking, "Are you serious? You expect me to dress up like a cow?" I have to say that I made everyone in our house dress up last year, and my husband even reluctantly did it. I had everyone put on black shirts and taped white shapes on them to look like a cow. I made the kids hold a cardboard sign that said Eat More Chikin. Took no time at all and everyone in my family got a free combo meal...easily a $25 value!! (Actually I took the boys there for lunch by myself, so we got TWO free meals that day. :) To read more about Cow Appreciation Day, go here. Also, for those of you who think you would never in a million years do this, last year they gave away a free chicken sandwich if you came with a little bit of cow inspired fashion. I saw several people get free sandwiches just for bringing a bandana that had cow print on it. I'm not sure if they will do that this year as well, but you never know. My whole family LOVES Chick-fil-a!!
I'll try to post a reminder about this as we get closer to July 9th.

Creating a Budget that Works for your Family
Can you guys believe that the month of June is almost over? Man, this summer is just flying by!! I sat down to figure out our July household budget last night and thought that it might be helpful for some of you if I let you know how we do our budget.
Let me start out by saying that we have just started doing a real concrete budget over the past year. That is so very sad to me!! My husband and I have always been very careful with our money, but it's amazing how big of a difference it can make to actually have a concrete budget to work from. I know that there are a ton of different ways to do a budget, and what works for one family might not work for another. You might already have a GREAT way to do a budget for your family, but I just wanted to share what works for us.
At the end of each month my husband and I sit down to make our budget for the following month. We know exactly how much money we will have coming in for the following month, so we sit down and "spend" it all out on paper. We have basic categories that we assign money to.
Our categories include:
-Tithes
-Missions
-Savings
-Mortgage
-Utilities (electricity, water, cable, phone, etc.)
-Food
-Medical (dr. visits, copay, prescriptions)
-Clothing
-Insurance
-Transportation (gas, insurance, oil change, car payment)
-Gifts
-Miscellaneous
Each family will have slightly different categories...you might have a baby care category, or a pet care category, or a vacation category, etc.
We list all of our categories out and write out exactly how much we are going to spend in each category through the month. We "spend" every bit of the money that we have coming in on paper so we know where our money will be going. This allows us the opportunity to really take charge of our money. Before we started doing this, we'd say that whatever amount we had left at the end of the month would go to our savings account. Wouldn't you know that we never seemed to have extra at the end of the month. This way we are sending it to our savings account right off the bat. It is there if we actually need it, but once it is out of our checking account, it is so much harder to try to justify spending it (unless there really is an emergency). Once the money in each category is spent, we know that we are done spending for that specific category. If all of our miscellaneous "fun" money is gone by the first week of the month, then we know that we'll have to scrimp for the rest of the month. Doing our budget this way has really made us aware of what we are spending and helps us to decide if we really want to spend our money on certain things. At the end of the month if we still have money left in any of our categories, we send it off to savings.
How do you do your budget? Or do you even do a budget? I sure wish that we had started following a budget years ago. It is so wonderful to feel like we have a say in how our money is being spent now!! If you have any other ways to do budgets or any tips on what works for your family, let me know. Leave a comment...you never know, your idea might help someone else!!

Sorry there haven't been any posts today. I've been busy doing stuff around the house, and a little later this afternoon my two older boys have dental appointments. I haven't had a chance to search for any deals today, but will try to get a few up and posted soon! Hope all of you are having a GREAT Thursday!

Check for an email from CVS!!
I posted earlier today about receiving emails from CVS that contain coupons in them, but I just checked my email and found an even BETTER deal from CVS!! I want y'all to check your emails too because you never know, you might have an email from them as well. The email asked if I would be willing to take a short survey. If I took the full survey I would be able to print out a coupon worth $10.00 Extra Care Bucks, and if I answered the first couple of questions and did not qualify to complete the rest of the survey I'd be able to print out a coupon for $2.00 Extra Care Bucks. I just took the survey. It's about what kind of paper/cleaning products you use at your household. The survey took me less than five minutes, and I earned $10.00 Extra Care Bucks just like that. Check your email and see if you might have an offer to take a survey as well. You might want to check your Spam folder!! Yea for FREE Extra Care Bucks!!

FREE Item at CVS
Do you guys ever read the emails that are sent out from CVS? I used to not even open up emails that were sent to me from companies, but if you aren't reading CVS emails you are definitely missing out on some GREAT deals!! It seems like every two to three weeks I receive an email from CVS with a high value coupon in it. Most of the times these coupons are for $4.00 off a $20.00 purchase or for $5.00 off a $25.00 purchase. I just received an email from them with a coupon for a completely FREE product...Choose between CVS/pharmacy Antibacterial Most Wipes (Travel Pack 20 ct.) or CVS/pharmacy Brand Moist Shave Cream.
One important thing to note, I believe that the bar code on these coupons links back to your Extra Care Card, so it should only work for the person it was emailed to!

Walgreens 101
I have had several people ask for more information about how to shop at Walgreens. I've been meaning to write a post about it for several weeks, but I keep putting it off. Let me start out by saying that Walgreens is definitely the most difficult store to understand, and I don't think you will truly understand how to effectively use coupons and Register Rewards until you go in and try deals yourself. Once you learn how to work your coupons at Walgreens you will be AMAZED at how much you can save!!
Some Basics at Walgreens:
Weekly Ads
You'll find a Walgreens ad in your newspaper each Sunday. Walgreens ads run from Sunday until the following Saturday. If you happen to not get an ad in your newspaper they are available by the front door at most Walgreens. (You can also browse the weekly ad at www.walgreens.com). In order to effectively shop at Walgreens you need to look through the ad and see what the deals are for the week. You will NOT get good deals at Walgreens unless you learn how to effectively shop the weekly sales! Every week I try to post the Register Reward deals for the weeks and tell you what coupons to use to maximize your savings with these deals.
Register Rewards (RRs)
Each week Walgreens will run several special promotions where if you buy a certain product you will receive a Register Reward. When you purchase an item that will generate a Register Reward, a catalina coupon will print by the cash register. The cashier will hand this to you along with your receipt once you have made your purchase. The Register Reward is a manufacturer's coupon that can be used to purchase other items at Walgreens. (With a few exceptions...prescriptions, tobacco, alcohol, stamps, lottery) When you receive a Register Reward be sure to keep it in a place where you won't lose it...it is like cash and cannot be replaced if you lose it!!
Register Reward Restrictions
-A Register Reward is a manufacturer coupon. It is not a coupon for a specific product, but can be used to lower your total purchase price. If you have a $4.00 Register Reward that you want to use, you must purchase at least $4.00 of merchandise...can't use a $4.00 Register Reward to pay for $3.50 of merchandise.
-If you buy two of the exact same products that will generate a Register Reward in one transaction, only one Register Reward will print out at the register.
Example...if Herbal Essence Shampoo will generate a $2.00 Register Reward this week, and you decide to buy 2 Herbal Essence Shampoos at one time, only one $2.00 Register Reward will print, BUT if you break your trip up into two different transactions...Transaction 1: You will receive a $2.00 Register Reward, and Transaction 2: You will receive a $2.00 Register Reward. Note, this is only the case if you are buying multiples of the exact same deal. If you were to buy 3 different products that will generate 3 different Register Rewards in one transaction, all three will print Register Rewards.
-You can not "ROLL" your Register Rewards into the same deal.
Example: Buy Herbal Essence Shampoo and receive a $2.00 Register Reward. If you buy it the first time a $2.00 Register Reward will print, but if you then try to go back through the store and buy Herbal Essence Shampoo again and use the $2.00 Register Reward you just earned to pay for it, you will be able to use the Register Reward, but a new Register Reward will NOT print.
-Register Rewards cannot be "rolled" into a deal by the same manufacturer.
Example: You have a Register Reward that you earned from buying a Proctor and Gamble product. If you use this Register Reward to try to buy another product from Proctor and Gamble that is supposed to issue an additional Register Reward, a new Register Reward will not print.
Make Money From Register Rewards
-Anytime you earn a higher value Register Reward than your out of pocket expense it is considered a money maker.
Example: Gillette Body Wash is priced at $4.50, and you will earn a $4.50 Register Reward when you buy one. You have a coupon for $2.00 off Gillette Body Wash from the newspaper. You will then pay $2.50 and receive a $4.50 Register Reward. You have earned more than you spent.
Note...a lot of coupon sites will say that you received the product FREE and made a profit of $2.00. I believe that is a little misleading...You will still have the initial cost of $2.50, but you will make a profit of $2.00 (not in actual cash, but in "store cash" in the form of a Register Reward).
How to Save the Most at Walgreens
-Roll your Register Rewards from one Transaction to another.
Remember you can't "roll" your Register Reward from one deal and do the exact same deal, but you can roll them on different deals.
Example: Buy Herbal Essence, and receive a $2.00 Register Reward. Then buy Gillette Body Wash. Use the $2.00 Register Reward that you just earned, and receive an additional $4.50 Register Reward. You can continue to roll these Register Rewards in a number of ways!
Once you earn your first Register Reward you will be able to take this Register Reward and purchase other items that will earn you even more Register Rewards. You can roll Register Rewards from deal to deal. By rolling your Register Rewards you will be AMAZED at how much you will reduce your out of pocket expense week after week. Some people only buy products that will generate more Register Rewards, and some people take Register Rewards that they've earned and use them to lower the price of grocery/cleaning/toiletry staples that they have a hard time finding a good deal on.
Walgreens Coupons:
-Walgreens has a monthly coupon book filled with Walgreens coupons. These are considered store coupons and can be combined with manufacturer's coupons to double up on savings. These are found at the front of the store next to their weekly ads. If you have a hard time finding them, ask a cashier and they should be able to help you.
-You'll also be able to find coupons in the actual weekly ad. These are again store coupons and can be combined with manufacturer's coupon.
NOTE...with Walgreens store coupons, if you are buying 3 of one particular item that you have a Walgreens store coupon for...you will not need 3 different Walgreens store coupons. If you hand the cashier 1 Walgreens store coupon, it will deduct the amount from each item that you have purchased. THIS IS NOT THE CASE FOR MANUFACTURER'S COUPONS!
-You will also find Walgreens store coupons online at walgreens.com
-Combine Walgreens store coupons with manufacturer's coupons to maximize your savings! (This is called "stacking").
Coupon to Item Ratio:
-When you are checking out at Walgreens you MUST have an equal number of products to manufacturer's coupons. (Walgreens store coupons do NOT count in this equation...ONLY manufacturer's coupons!!) If you buy 3 products, you will only be able to use 3 coupons. If you try to use a fourth coupon, the register will beep and you will not be able to use it. Why is this important? The Register Reward is considered a manufacturer's coupon. If you have more coupons than products, you should look through the store and find a small, inexpensive "filler" item so that you will be able to use an additional coupon.
Example: You are buying 3 Gillette Body Washes, and you want to use 3 $2.00 off Gillette body wash coupons. You also have an additional $4.00 Register Reward to use. Now you have 3 products and 4 coupons...pick up a pencil, small pack of gum, or clearance item...now you will have four items and four coupons and you will be able to use all of your coupons!!
Order to Hand Coupons to Cashier:
When you are checking out at Walgreens, you should hand your coupons to the cashier in this order: Register Rewards, manufacturer's coupons, and finally Walgreens store coupons.
I know all of this seems very confusing and overwhelming, but I promise that once you get the hang of it, you will be saving so much money and be having so much fun doing it!! If you are just beginning, I would suggest going through the Walgreens ad and finding just one deal that will generate a Register Reward. Go to Walgreens and just do this deal...buy one product and receive one Register Reward. The next week look through the ad again and use your Register Reward that you received from your first trip to lower the cost of your second trip. Once you see how easy it is, you'll be rolling Register Rewards left and right and barely breaking a dollar bill! :)
All of the examples that I've used are just examples. Look through the ad and find some real Register Reward deals, or go to my latest Walgreens Ad/Coupon Match Up to find some deals!!
Coupon for Coke Products
This isn't a very high value coupon, but it is still a GREAT coupon to print if your family drinks Cokes because it is EXTREMELY RARE to find a coupon for sodas. This coupon is for $1.00 off two twin packs or four 2-liter bottles of any Coca-Cola product. Go here if you are interested in printing this coupon. I really think this one will reach it's print limit fast, so if you are at all interested I'd print it now because it might not be available for long.
Note...while you are printing the coupon for Coke, you might want to look at the other coupons available on the same page!
Thanks Printable Coupons and Deals!!
FREE Breakfast Sandwich at Whataburger Tomorrow!!
I received an email this morning from Whataburger about this GREAT FREE ITEM!! I am all about FREE!! Tomorrow (June 22nd) from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. you can receive a FREE Bacon or Sausage Breakfast on a Bun at Whataburger. You can even add Jalapenos and Picante to it for FREE. If you want more information about this FREEBIE, go here.
For those of you in San Angelo, I called the Whataburger store on Knickerbocker to ask if they were participating. The lady I talked to said that they were, but that you would need a coupon to receive your free sandwich. I told her that I received a newsletter from Whataburger and that there was no mention of a coupon, or a place to even print a coupon. She said that if you printed off the ad from the computer that it should work as well. So if you are interested in this deal, print off the ad from the above link and you should be able to get yourself a FREE breakfast sandwich...with no other purchase necessary.
I'm hoping that they will honor this. We'll just have to wait and see!

FREE Nivea Body Wash at Some Wal-Mart Stores
Couponing to Disney reported finding Men's Nivea Body Wash for $3.00 at Wal-Mart. (I believe that she lives in Alabama). I've read on several other blogs that other people have also found it priced at $3.00 at their Wal-Marts as well. I made a quick run up to the Wal-Mart on Sherwood Way to see what they are priced at our local Wal-Mart...price cut to $3.97.
For those of you who find it for $3.00, you should be able to score FREE Body Wash
-use coupon for $3.00 off Nivea Men's Body Wash (found in 5/2 RedPlum insert)
Final Price: FREE
For those of you in San Angelo, I'd hold onto your coupon and see if our store might drop the price in the next few days...Wal-Mart prices tend to vary based on what region you live in, but it's still something to keep your eye on. $0.97 is still a good price to pay (for something that is regularly priced close to $5.00). Let me know if you are able to find it at a lower price at the Wal-Mart you shop at!

Go here if you are interested in printing any of these coupons. If you are on the fence about printing these coupons, I'd at least print the coupon for $1.00 off one package of cookies...this is a very high value one. Most coupons for cookies are for $1.00 off two, or $0.55 off one...just my opinion though. :)
I made myself clean our house this morning. Is it just me or does it seem like your house gets even dirtier over the weekend? I usually try to clean the house a little bit at a time when the kids are occupied, or my youngest one is napping. The last several weeks I've been spending that time searching for deals to post on the blog, so housecleaning has definitely taken a back seat. I made myself stay off the computer until I got the house completely clean. It feels so nice to have a clean house again, but now I'm a bit behind on posting new deals. I'll try to get caught up, and have some new coupons/deals for you over the next few hours!! Hope you are all having a wonderful Monday.
